The naval sector uses sensors for collecting environmental data that are help for the navigation. The directional averaged wave and surface current data can be obtained by radar sensors from vessel in transit. The tracking of oil spill is possible from vessels by processing standard marine X-band radar images (OSD). The program of Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) recruits ships to record and transmit shipboard weather during the navigation.
